Winter Break Hacks: Organizing Your Home While the Kids Are Home

1. Set Up a Daily Schedule

Even though school is out, kids thrive on routine. Create a flexible daily schedule to keep everyone on track. Include time for meals, play, and rest, but also designate short periods for tidying up. For example, introduce a “10-minute clean-up” after each major activity, like crafting or playing with toys. It’s amazing how much can be accomplished in a few minutes when everyone works together!

2. Declutter Toys Together

Winter break is the perfect time to sort through old toys, especially with new ones arriving during the holidays. Involve your kids in the process by making it a fun activity. Ask them to choose toys they no longer play with and donate them to a local charity. This teaches generosity while freeing up space. Bonus: they’ll appreciate their favorite toys even more when they’re not buried under clutter.

3. Create Dedicated Activity Stations

When kids are home all day, their projects and playtime can quickly take over the house. Set up specific zones for activities:

  • Craft Corner: A small table or a section of the dining table with art supplies neatly stored in bins or baskets.
  • Reading Nook: A cozy space with books and blankets.
  • Game Zone: A spot for board games or puzzles.

Having designated areas helps contain the mess and keeps your kids focused on one activity at a time.

4. Organize Winter Gear

With kids constantly in and out of the house, boots, coats, and gloves can pile up. Set up a simple system by using hooks for coats and a basket or tray for wet shoes. Assign each child their own cubby or bag for hats, scarves, and gloves to prevent the dreaded “missing mitten” crisis.

5. Teach Responsibility with Chores

Winter break is a great time to introduce or reinforce age-appropriate chores. Younger kids can help put away toys or fold towels, while older children can assist with vacuuming or organizing the pantry. Turn it into a game by setting timers or offering small rewards, like extra playtime.

6. Declutter One Room at a Time

Use the extra time at home to tackle one room each day or week. Involve the kids where possible—maybe they can help organize the pantry or sort their clothes. Breaking the work into small, manageable chunks makes it less overwhelming.

7. Plan for Quiet Time

Finally, carve out quiet moments in the day when kids can read, color, or watch a movie. Use this time to catch up on your own organizing goals, whether it’s clearing out a drawer or tackling a closet.

Winter break doesn’t have to be chaotic. By involving your kids and implementing these simple hacks, you can create a more organized, joyful home while making the most of this special time together.
