Back-to-school season has a way of sneaking up on us.
One minute it’s July and everyone’s living in swimsuits, eating snacks at random hours, and asking what day it is. Then suddenly there are early alarms, packed lunches, missing shoes, school papers, practices, homework, and approximately 47 things everyone needs to remember before 7:30 a.m.
You don’t need to organize your entire house before school starts.
But setting up a few key areas before the first day can make the transition back into a routine so much easier.
Here’s where we’d start:
1. Give backpacks and shoes an actual home
The best organizing systems solve problems that happen every single day.
Choose one designated spot near the door your family uses most for backpacks, shoes, lunchboxes, and anything that needs to leave the house the next morning.
It doesn’t have to be a beautiful mudroom. A few hooks, baskets, or even a designated section of a closet can work.
The goal: No one yelling, “WHERE IS MY BACKPACK?” five minutes before you need to leave.
2. Create a school-paper landing spot
School brings an unbelievable amount of paper into the house.
Decide now where it goes.
Create one simple place for papers that need your attention – forms to sign, permission slips, homework that needs to go back, and anything with a deadline.
Try not to make this system too complicated. If it takes six steps to file a permission slip, nobody is going to use it.
One basket or wall file labeled ACTION can save you from finding something important crumpled at the bottom of a backpack three weeks later.
3. Set up a grab-and-go snack area
This is one of the easiest changes you can make before school starts.
Create a designated section of your pantry and refrigerator for school-approved, grab-and-go snacks.
Even better: put kid-approved options where they can reach them.
This makes packing lunches faster and gives kids a little independence when they’re grabbing an after-school snack.
Tip: You don’t need to decant everything into matching containers. Visibility and accessibility matter more than making your pantry look like Pinterest.
4. Do a quick clothing reset
You do not need to completely reorganize every child’s closet.
Instead, spend 20–30 minutes checking the things that cause problems on school mornings:
- Do their everyday shoes still fit?
- Are school clothes easy to find?
- Are drawers so full they can’t see what they own?
- Are outgrown clothes taking up valuable space?
- Do socks somehow exist individually but never as pairs?
Removing what no longer fits and making everyday clothes easier to access can eliminate a surprising amount of morning frustration.
5. Create one place for the things everyone forgets
Think about what sends your family running through the house at the last second.
Water bottles. Library books. Sports gear. Instruments. Chromebooks. Chargers. Dance bags.
Create a “needs to go” spot near your exit.
Anything that needs to leave the house the next day goes there the night before.
It’s simple – but simple systems are usually the ones people actually keep using.
6. Don’t organize for your ideal family. Organize for your real one.
This might be the most important tip.
If your kids always drop their backpacks in the same spot, putting backpack storage across the house probably won’t work.
If everyone takes their shoes off at the door, that’s where the shoe system needs to be.
If school papers always land on the kitchen counter, create a paper system near the kitchen counter.
Good organization works with the way your family naturally lives – not against it.
Start Small Before August Gets Busy
You still have time before school routines are back in full swing, and you don’t need a massive home overhaul to make a difference.
Pick the two areas that cause the most stress during the school year and start there.
A backpack hook.
A basket for school papers.
A stocked lunch station.
A place for tomorrow’s essentials.
Those small systems may not seem exciting – but on a hectic Tuesday morning when everyone knows where their stuff is?
That’s when you realize just how valuable they are.
And if your home needs more than a quick back-to-school reset, OWL Professional Organizers can help create practical systems built around the way your family actually lives – so they’re easier to maintain long after the first day of school.
