10 Habits of Highly Organized People

As a professional organizer, I meet so many different people and hear their struggles with trying to maintain their homes and lives. I am constantly sharing my habits with my clients to try to help them and today I wanted to share them with you! So if you are feeling overwhelmed with your home and life, I hope you will find these 10 habits helpful. Let’s go!

Daily Nighttime Tidy Up

Ever since I had kids, I had to incorporate a nighttime tidy up routine. Now, don’t get scared away! This truly doesn’t take me a very long time at all. You will be surprised at the amount of cleaning up you can do in 15 minutes. But these 15 minutes go A LONG WAY. They make me excited to wake up the next day to a calm and picked up home.

Completing Laundry Loads

When I see baskets and baskets of laundry in my clients’ laundry room day after day, I just know that they are struggling to keep up. Most of the time, I will also find folded (or even unfolded) laundry in their bedrooms just waiting to be put away.

In these situations, I like to tell my clients to not overwhelm themselves but trying to do multiple loads at once because that is clearly not working. Highly organized people typically will do a ONE FULL load of laundry daily. This includes washing, drying, folding and putting away their clothes. 1 full load of laundry every day (or even every other day) really keeps you on top of your laundry and keeps your laundry room from piling up with clothes!

Creating To-Do Lists

To-do lists are EVERYTHING! I honestly don’t know how I ever functioned without keeping one. I like to have a daily to-do list but I also have a running to-do list which is just a place where I can do a quick brain dump. Writing things down on paper really holds you accountable to getting things done and it works like a charm!

Using a Planner

This leads to the use of a planner, whether that is digital or paper. I, personally, love writing in a physical planner but YOU DO YOU! Having one place to keep track of appointments, different work schedules, events for kids, etc. is an absolute essential for every organized person. At the beginning of 2022, I decided to try to live my life without a planner and I honestly felt lost haha!

Meal Planning

“What’s for dinner?” is a question that we get nagged with EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. It can really be so frustrating not knowing what the gameplan is for the week and not having the necessary groceries. Keep in mind that a lot of the times, we then end up eating out and that ALSO can make us feel really bad.

Meal planning doesn’t have to be difficult. It honestly takes 10 minutes to just come up with a list of 6 or 7 dinners you are going to make during the week. But that list will come in so handy after a long day of work!

Completing Tasks Right Away

Highly organized people do not let tasks pile up. They get things done right away! For example, my clients will sometimes tell me that they are holding onto something because they need to sell it. I tell them right then and there to go ahead and list it on Facebook marketplace. There is no better time than NOW. Doing things right away is what will keep your to-do list in check 😊

Regular Decluttering

Decluttering is something I am so passionate about. Over the years, I have decluttered my house to a point I never even dreamed of. But every day, there is still more! There is always something that can leave my space, whether that’s something to sell, donate or trash. Regular decluttering truly has helped me to stay organized during the most busiest seasons of life.

Putting Dishes Away Daily

This habit is so simple and it makes a huge difference as well. I mean, who wants to wake up and see a pile of dishes waiting to be cleaned in the sink? Maybe I am being dramatic but that just seems like a nightmare to me haha. So make a habit to wash dishes and put them away throughout the day. If you are a dishwasher user, make it a habit to run it every night and unload it every simple morning.

Labelling

Labelling can be extremely fun and helpful. Yes, sometimes they are totally unnecessary and done more for just looks, but having labels just makes you FEEL like an organized person and makes you want to KEEP things organized. Hey, you do whatever works 🙂

Cleaning Routine

The last habit that I wanted to share is creating a cleaning routine. This can be as simple as vacuuming every night, making the bed every morning, and wiping off the kitchen counters or it can be very detailed. Either way, having a cleaning routine just keeps you and your home in line. You know what you need to be doing to keep up with your home. Routines go a long way!

And there you have it! 10 habits of highly organized people! Which habits do you already have and what new ones did you learn in this post? We’d love to hear from you!
